President's Newsletter - Winter 2011Welcome to 2011, I hope you all survived the chilly end to last year. The church never closed during the snowy weather so a big thank you to those who were able to slide, hike or skate in, clearing and salting paths, to ensure that services ran for those few souls who braved the elements Attendances ranged from 16 to 1 for the worst two weeks when it seemed as if the whole of Scotland ground to a halt. Since this church is run by volunteers it is quite an achievement to have remained open.
However a break in the weather ensured we had larger attendances for our final services of the year when our fantastic all singing, dancing members put on a wonderful Carol Service to end 2010. According to some participants their aches and pains afterwards just about ended them! We also received very generous contributions to our charity appeals so an enormous thanks for your kindness. Charities are struggling to raise funds in the current economic downturn so all donations are very welcome. We have always had concern for animal welfare in our church but just as welcome as financial help is a visit as animals are desperately seeking loving homes. Many such visits by members have resulted in wonderful experiences for all concerned. I know, speaking from personal experience: ours is Sophie the Staffie. By the time you read this the church will be open for public services once more. Although we say the church closes for a few weeks at Christmas that is not strictly true. The pastoral life of the church continues and phone calls and requests are always answered as soon as possible. While there is great joy during the festive period it can also be a very sad and depressing time for some of our members and a visit or phone call is very welcome. So if you haven’t seen members for a while try to get in touch or mention it to a committee member. We have a busy year ahead so keep watching for forthcoming events and make sure you don’t miss out on the interesting activities that will take place. And remember all those worthwhile New Year Resolutions that seemed so good on the 1st of January!!!!. June Herraghty BA, MSc. President and Minister Members Evening, 19 November 2010
